Overview Of Role

Net Zero and Resilient Farming Area are recruiting a Band C Science Technician for 12 months to work on an exciting Innovate UK project involving the testing of seaweed derived agricultural products in a series of plant growth trials in controlled environment facilities, commencing 1 September 2024.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the owners of the largest licensed rope-grown kelp farm in the UK. The main duties will involve the collection of soil cores to be used in plant growth experiments and their preparation for sowing, and subsequent watering and harvesting. There will also be a need to prepare soil and plant samples for laboratory analysis, data collection and compilation and primary data analysis.

Experience of conducting plant growth trials is not essential but preferable, as is the ability to carry out chemical calculations and prepare soil and plant materials for laboratory analysis. It will also be essential to be able to use a micro-balance for the weighing of very small quantities of chemicals and plant/soil materials.

The post will work as part of a small team, but you will be surrounded by many other science support staff and scientists working on a wide range of projects within Rothamsted’s Net Zero and Resilient Farming Strategic Area based at the North Wyke site in Devon.

The post attracts a salary of £24,225- £26,573 per annum.
