Overview Of Role
Are you a skilled and inventive research software engineer with a passion for data and science? Do you want to use your talents to help our scientists build a sustainable future for agriculture?

Rothamsted Research is a leading agricultural research centre and we are transforming how we manage and use our data. We are seeking a Research Software Engineer to join our Research Data and Systems Team. Your role in the team will be to help build the data systems to drive our transformation forward, including:
  • develop Rothamsted's North Wyke Farm Platform data infrastructures
  • build new data systems to boost our strategic science programmes
  • develop new tools to drive forward Rothamsted’s Digital Transformation programme.
The North Wyke Farm Platform (NWFP) is a highly instrumented and data rich research infrastructure used to assess the impacts of different farm management systems. A key task is to modernise the NWFP data platform to provide FAIR and machine accessible data and models. This will enable the NWFP to become a valuable resource for new areas of data intensive science, including development of farm Digital Twins. As part of the NWFP project team you will work with data scientists and modellers at Rothamsted and research software engineers at the Turing Institute.

As a successful post holder you will have knowledge of and experience in:
  • full-stack web development of data driven applications for research users
  • API development
  • database development using relational and NoSQL data models, and ETL processes
  • applying software engineering best practices for managing, testing, and deploying your code
  • using at least two of Java + Spring Boot, Angular or similar Typescript, Python, R, C#, PHP Laravel, and SQL.
As a member of Research Data and Systems Team you will:
  • provide database and code management assistance to scientists and students.
  • recognise the importance of software sustainability in research environments
  • assist the Data Team Lead to provide best practice guidelines and training for scientific database and code management.
  • liaise with IT Services to ensure bespoke software and databases are appropriately supported.
We are open to applicants seeking full-time or part-time roles. Your employment location can be at either our North Wyke campus in Devon, or Harpenden campus in Hertfordshire. Options are available for onsite, hybrid or fully remote UK working. This is a 2 year fixed-term appointment (to 31/03/2025) in the first instance. Salary to be agreed dependent on grade and experience.
