Overview Of Role

An experienced postdoctoral plant molecular biochemist is required join the Molecular Discovery Group, an integrated multi-omics research team at Rothamsted Research who are investigating plant biomass as a feedstock for the production of high value products for industrial biotechnology, renewable chemical and pharma industries. Specifically, the post-holder will be involved in the cloning and functional characterisation of willow and poplar secondary metabolite biosynthesis genes and enzymes, including the reconstruction of those pathways in microbial systems.

The successful candidate will be proficient in practical molecular biology including gene cloning, construct design, and heterologous expression in microbial systems. Post-doctoral experience in the molecular biology of oxidative secondary metabolism in plants and expression of plant genes in yeast is essential, as is expertise in the characterisation of secondary metabolic enzymes at the biochemical level.

This project forms part of the larger Institute Strategic Programme (ISP) “Tailoring Plant Metabolism” at Rothamsted which aims to understand carbon flux into secondary plant metabolism in the context of the sustainable production of  high value compounds. This post presents an opportunity for a  molecular biochemist, working in natural products, to join an active and well-resourced multidisciplinary team that is delineating a novel biosynthetic pathway and applying that knowledge to engineering a number of bio-systems for new sources of products. Informal enquiries can be made to mike.beale@rothamsted.ac.uk. The successful candidate will have experience in a natural products group and be immediately available.

This is a full time 12 month fixed-term contract in the first instance, (with the possibility of a further 12 month extension) and a salary in the range  of  £37,890 - £41,438 p.a. dependant on experience.
