Overview Of Role

The Department of Plant Sciences has an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Technician to join the oil seed group within the “Tailoring Plant Metabolism” Institute Strategic Programme to work on mechanisms regulating oil yield and quality in Camelina sativa. The successful candidate will work within a team of researchers to understand fundamental aspects of seed metabolic engineering, generating novel products in oil seeds. The post holder will be responsible for Camelina transformation and describing the impact of novel pathways on endogenous seed oil synthesis in Camelina. The successful candidate will be responsible for introduction of binary constructs into Camelina using established protocols, screening transgenic Camelina plants, and analysing seed traits, including fatty acid profiles and oil content. This is an excellent chance to work at the leading edge of plant metabolic engineering.

Ideally the candidate will have a degree in biological sciences or a related discipline and experience in growing plants, plant biochemistry and seed development. Experience in basic molecular techniques and/or metabolite analysis is desirable. Dexterity and the motivation to work to a high standard of accuracy is prerequisite, together with the expectation of being an active participant within the wider research group.

This full-time position will be based at our Harpenden site, offering a fixed-term contract to 31 March 2022 with the possibility of a further one-year extension, with a starting salary in the range of £24,225-£26,573 per annum.
