Work Area:
11 Oct 2020
Overview Of Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral scientist to work on the recently funded BBSRC BBR project, “The UK-CMCB UK Crop Microbiome CryoBank (UK-CMCB)”. The project is a new and exciting collaboration between scientists at Rothamsted Research, CABI, the John Innes Centre, James Hutton Institute and the Scottish Rural College (SRUC). The successful applicant will have experience of plant microbiology, molecular biology and bioinformatics.

The overall objective of the project is to establish a cryopreserved and characterised crop microbiome resource. The focus will be on the microbiomes of major UK crops from a variety of different soil types obtained from across the UK. The project will provide an essential resource for research on the crop microbiome that can be exploited to deliver sustainable solutions to improve plant health and crop productivity.

The successful candidate will be based at Rothamsted Research and will work on the following 3 areas:

  1. Microbial library creation. Generation of the biological resource through the construction of plant microcosms and generation of microbial library from soil and crop roots.
  2. Next generation sequencing. DNA extractions from rhizoplane and bulk soil derived from the microcosms will be used for metagenomics and amplicon sequencing analysis.
  3. Microbial functional screening and genomics. Microbial isolates will undergo functional microbiological screening to identify growth promoting traits and a subset will undergo genomic sequencing and analysis. Microbial SynComs containing combinations of plant beneficial microbes will be developed and tested in in vitro as well as in planta conditions.
The post will be based at our Harpenden site, and will initially be a 3 year fixed term contact with salary ranging from £31,350 to £32,315 per annum.
Interviews will be held on 23rd October 2020
