Overview Of Role

An opportunity exists to join the Strategic programme ‘Soils to Nutrition’ at Rothamsted Research which aims to understand nutrient cycling in arable and grassland systems at a range of scales. This post focuses on carbon cycling and seeks to employ a postdoctoral scientist with a thorough understanding of carbon cycling processes in soil and, ideally, someone who is highly skilled in using a suite of analytical and field techniques and advanced data analysis skills (e.g., using R, Matlab or similar).

The successful candidate will investigate several aspects related to soil structure including infiltration, compaction, aggregate stability and soil organic carbon at high spatial resolution in response to soil treatments and animal behaviour within fields.  These measurements will be compared to detailed analysis of porosity and connected porosity determined from X-ray computed tomography of both soil columns and aggregates to determine the degree to which field-based measurements can act as proxies for detailed structural parameters.

At the field scale, the postdoc will, in addition to measuring C and its flow through the agricultural system, estimate budgets considering inputs/outputs and losses integrating existing data from the North Wyke Farm Platform and the recently established Long Scale Rotation Experiment in Harpenden. They will also identify gaps in the data and help develop protocols for new measurements and implement those. Additionally, they will carry out measurements of to incorporate contrasting land use types in the upper Taw catchment observatory.

They will be expected to write publications from their work and contribute to other papers developed by the wider programme of work and will work in a team of postdocs, lab and field technicians as well as researchers highly recognised in agricultural systems research.

This post is initially available for 2 years with a starting salary in the range £31,350 to £32,315 per annum.
