Overview Of Role

Rothamsted Research is seeking to appoint to a Scientific Technician based at the Harpenden site, to join the metabolomics facility and work on the preparation of analytical samples for plant metabolomics.

The main emphasis will be on the preparation of samples for spectroscopic analysis (NMR or LC-MS) and will involve solvent extraction according to existing protocols. The post will also include undertaking associated tissue preparation activities such as milling and weighing as well as general laboratory maintenance duties. The metabolomics facility provides a service to internal colleagues and external customers and collaborators. This includes servicing large strategic research programmes such as Tailoring Plant Metabolism, where colleagues are investigating the use of willow as a source of novel high value chemicals.

Suitable candidates will have previous laboratory experience, preferably in the area of analytical chemistry.  Ideally suited to a graduate (or NVQ qualified) chemist, the successful candidate will receive full training but previous experience in sample preparation, solvent extraction, HPLC, NMR or mass spectrometry would be desirable as would existing experience working with standard operating procedures in a service laboratory. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary network of scientific specialists and post-doctorate scientists who deliver comprehensive service and research in plant metabolites. The post represents a good opportunity for candidates wishing to grow their technical skills and develop their scientific career in a well resourced laboratory.

This post is available for 3 years in the first instance with a salary between £24,225 and £26,573 per annum.
