Agri-Environment Modeller

Salary Details:

Work Area:
Closing Date:

Overview Of Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced modeller to join our team at Rothamsted Research to help shape our future research in the development and application of digital approaches to modelling agricultural systems.

Within the institute’s programme for the digitalisation of farming, the modeller will integrate field- and herd-based observations (crop and animal growth/quality) with site-specific management information to model land-based production at the farm- and catchment scale. She/he will validate productivity and environmental efficiency indicators for different pedoclimaticzones, landscapes and farm systems using ground and earth observation (EO) data.  Overall, this work will increase our “understanding of Crop and Livestock Systems in the context of Genotype x Environment x Management interaction” at multiple scales, eventually to improve Nutrient Use Efficiency of arable and mixed farming systems.

The candidate will join the “Environment and Systems Modelling” cluster of Sustainable Agriculture Sciences Department with focus on the Institute Strategic Program “Soil to Nutrition” (ISP-S2N). The candidate will collaborate closely with colleagues at the North Wyke site, Okehampton (livestock systems) and exploit synergies with colleagues working in collaborative projects between the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology and Rothamsted Research. This work will feed into a Sustainable Intensification (SI) Metrics based on scalable evidence (i.e. EO and ground truth) integrated with modelling to aid monitoring and improving resource use efficiency.

This role will complement our existing team with experience in field and catchment scale simulations of agri-environment processes. The applicants should have a keen interest to upscale water- and nutrient-limited production, and a passion to test and improve existing modelling software, and eventually lead further research.
