Overview Of Role
We have an interesting new opportunity for post-doctoral scientist to join our team at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden in the role of an Agri-Environment Modeller. The purpose of this appointment is to expand existing generic mathematical procedures and modelling tools to increase our “understanding of Crop and Livestock Systems in the context of Genotype x Environment x Management interaction” at multiple scales. This work will help to improve Nutrient Use Efficiency of arable and mixed farming systems.

The candidate’s activities will be located in the “Environment and Systems Modelling” cluster of Sustainable Agriculture Sciences Department and collaborate closely with colleagues at the North Wyke site (livestock systems) within the Institute Strategic Program “Soil to Nutrition” (ISP-S2N).

This position will complement our existing team with experience in field scale simulation of agri-environment processes, who has a keen interest to upscale water- and nutrient-limited production, and a passion to test and improve existing modelling software.

The post-holder will integrate field- and herd-based observations (crop and animal growth/quality) with spatial and site management information to model productivity at the farm-scale. Productivity and efficiency indicators will be validated using ground and earth observation (EO) data for different pedoclimatic landscapes and farm systems/types. The candidate will also exploit synergies with the modelling and remote sensing components in related collaborative projects between the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology and Rothamsted Research. The main expected output is to generate Sustainable Intensification (SI) Metrics based on scalable evidence (i.e. EO data) integrated with model-based predictions in aid of monitoring improvements of resource use efficiency.
