Overview Of Role

Rothamsted Research are carrying out a collaborative research project (Viz Ag) with Glas Data a Cornish based SME who is developing an open, cloud based ecosystem designed to unify agricultural data. This project is seeking to recruit a Data Engineer to join the team. The successful candidate will be a passionate developer with a flair for precision and quality, someone who takes pride in the code they write. The role involves working as part of the development team with Rothamsted Research & Glas Data to maintain existing features and build new ones. We are looking for a passionate and driven data engineer to help drive this young product into an exciting emerging market.

This temporary contract is initially until March 2020 with Rothamsted Research to deliver the Viz Ag project supported through the Agri-tech Cornwall programme and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Agri-tech Cornwall is a £10m initiative to support ambitious small and medium sized Cornish companies to develop innovations to improve efficiency, profitability and resilience in the agricultural sector. The project is led by Duchy College Rural Business School in partnership with leading research institutions – the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth and Rothamsted Research, as well as the Cornwall Development Company.

After March 2020 there may be an opportunity to be employed in a similar role with Glas Data at their Penryn offices, depending on the candidate and the business requirements. As a data engineer you will be working on the innovative Viz Ag project in "Precision Farming" predicting crop yields on farm. The right candidate could then go on to form the data science and AI wing of Glas Data.

This role will be based at either the Glas Data’s office in Penryn, Cornwall or Rothamsted Research’s office in North Wyke, Okehampton Devon. We allow some remote working but require significant time on site.

Responsibilities:

Take on primary responsibilities in Glas Data's new Crop Yield prediction tool, led by Rothamsted Research.

  • Including:
    • Linking model input and output to Glas Data's core system.
    • Maintain and develop interfaces that allow researchers to continue to use the model.
    • Support principal investigators in using the model for research purposes.
    • Help the company deliver more predictive farming tools.
    • Help to architect, build and maintain Glas Data’s core platform used by the Viz Ag project
    • Develop new and existing feature sets both individually and as part of the development team
    • Take part in weekly stand ups and sprint reviews
    • Test ALL code
