Overview Of Role
The KnetMiner group at Rothamsted tackles computational and scientific challenges of data integration in order to provide researchers with software tools that will streamline the biological knowledge discovery process and drive forward the development of better crops. We are looking for a Bioinformatics Engineer to join our team in Harpenden. We're a dynamic, smart and enthusiastic group and by joining us, you will have the opportunity to working alongside our talented and passionate engineers and bioinformaticians to build and deliver high-quality software to our users from academia and industry.
About the role: We are looking for a Bioinformatics Engineer who can find elegant solutions to difficult problems and get things done in time. We follow agile practices and work in short iterations. We expect our candidate to be able to split a large task into a number of smaller steps, each one having a measurable or visible result. Our data processing (ETL) scripts are written in Python. The KnetMiner front-end is in HTML, CSS, JavaScript (with emphasis on jQuery). Our back-end and data integration platform (Ondex) is written in Java. In a role of Bioinformatics Engineer you will:
  • Develop biological Knowledge Graphs for the study of pathogen-host interactions 
  • Conceive, code and support new components for the KnetMiner software
  • Automate and improve ETL tasks
  • Improve our development environment
About you: We'd love to hear from you if you are a programming expert, have experience in creating applications for life sciences and have:
  • Excellent understanding of genetics and molecular biology. Confident navigating literature to quickly gain an understanding of known disease mechanisms and drug/fungicide targeting strategies
  • Fundamental knowledge of Python, JavaScript, Java, CSS
  • Ability to create web UI components to visualize/summarize biological information
  • Expertise in modern frameworks such as Spring, jUnit, node.js, jQuery, React, Angular 2 or similar
  • Knowledge of graph databases such as Neo4j and query languages such as Cypher
  • Understanding of OOP and MVC principles
