Overview Of Role

Rothamsted Research has an exciting opportunity for a Research and IT Systems Administrator to be responsible for the management, effective operation and development of our Linux/Unix systems (incl.clusters, etc), the advanced VMWare infrastructure, the large storage (1PB)systems, the data backup services and related IT infrastructure.

The institute uses a virtualised server infrastructure (VMware), Microsoft Windows Server & Linux technologies (incl. Active Directory/NIS etc) and high capacity SAN/NAS technology for data storage based on EMC Isilon clustered storage systems. A number of specialist applications (e.g. Galaxy) exist on our Linux/Unix servers that provide our scientists an easy access to our high-performance computing cluster. for the Institute, as well as other specialised applications

Extensive experience of managing Linux/Unix based computing infrastructure(CentOS) is essential, coupled with systems management, SAN/NAS Storage and back up administration and configuration and relevant experience in VMW administration and configuration.


The successful candidate will lead the continuous planning and development of these essential infrastructure areas and will have good analytical and communication skills. You will work directly with the Bioinformatics Team at Rothamsted to support a range of software and data service sprovided to internal and external users. These are supported using Docker, SaltStack,Conda, EasyBuild, SLURM, Grafana etc, so experience in these or similar applications would be desirable.


Experience in the development of administration and maintenance scripts will also be required. The post holder will also be expected to assist with support and development of aspects of the Microsoft Windows server estate as part of our commitment to cross-skill the department and to ensure interoperability between users of Linux/Unix and Windows-based computing resources. Participating in Out of Hours arrangements may be necessary.


You will have a degree (e.g BSc, MSc in Computer Science, IT or similar) or equivalent experience. Along with a record of supporting users’needs by, for instance, running training courses. An enthusiastic team player with excellent interpersonal skills, you should value quality of service and respond positively to new challenges.


You will be joining a team of 10 IT Systems specialists who provide IT services to both our Harpenden and North Wyke sites. This role will be based in Harpenden.

This is a full-time fixed term 3 year appointment with a salary in the range of £37,890 - £41,438 per annum
