Closing Date:

Overview Of Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research/Crop Scientist to take the lead for the wheat – take-all disease interaction studies.  The take-all research portfolio at Rothamsted is globally unique with its focus on identifying and characterising different sources of host resistance to take-all, exploring and exploiting a novel soil trait called low take-all inoculum build-up (lowTAB) controlled by wheat genetics (through major QTLs)  and through exploring the dynamics of the soil microbiome in successive cropping seasons (bacterial and fungal communities) as well as the different types of chemistries produced by these organisms alone and in combinations.

The new take-all team leader will be involved in continuing a range of field and non-field experiments as well as supervising PhD students and technical staff.  The post is part of the BBSRC funded Designing Future wheat cross institute programme which is due for renewal in April 2022.

The new leader will be expected to develop novel and innovative approaches to investigate the wheat – take-all interaction and to win additional funding and PhD studentships.   A working knowledge of take-all – cereal interactions although an asset is not an essential criterion for this role.

The successful candidate will have a strong publication record, showing evidence of work at the least at national level.  Technical and methodological skills together with proven experience in designing and delivering research projects is essential.

This is a full-time fixed term appointment to 31st March 2022 (in the 1st instance) offering a salary in the range of £37,890 to £41,438 per annum.

Interviews will be carried out 27th and 28th August 2019
