Overview Of Role

We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist and Modeller, preferably with a background in Agriculture or/and Environmental Sciences. Candidates should have a keen interest in spatial up-scaling and earth observation (EO) data in the context of sustainable agriculture solutions. The post-holder will lead the integration of modelling and remote sensing to underpin options for future sustainable agricultural management.

The purpose of this appointment is to expand existing mathematical procedures and modelling tools to increase our understanding of the interaction between Crop Species/Genotype x Environment x Management at multiple scales. The aim is to develop metrics for monitoring sustainable intensification of Agricultural Systems, fuse data of different origin and quality, and assimilate data to improve the predictive power of models.

The work will be conducted at the interface of the Institute Strategic Programme “Achieving Sustainable Agricultural Systems” (ASSIST) and the recently approved project “AgLand” (Enabling the Design of Agricultural Landscapes that Deliver Multiple Functions). Both are collaborative projects between Rothamsted Research and the Center of Ecology and Hydrology. The successful candidate will be working in the “Environment and Systems Modelling” cluster of the Department of Sustainable Agriculture Sciences at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden, collaborate with the upscaling team in the Soil-2-Nutrition programme and develop projects within the AgriTech Research Innovation Accelerator (AgRIA) programme.

The post-holder will be encouraged to develop their track record in data-driven modelling and establish a career in monitoring and forecasting productivity at the farm systems/landscape scale using EO data.

Interviews to be held either 20th or 23rd September 2019
